Basket boats, lantern nights and the road inland

Hoi An fits in a morning. Booking it well takes longer.

Down on the Thu Bon

Almost every good Hoi An day ends up on water.

Below the town the Thu Bon breaks into channels through the water palms, and the trips divide neatly. Round boats in the morning, crab traps at midday, a candle let go from a rowboat after dark. Here is what it costs to get into each one.

Six shapes of a Hoi An day

The days out Hoi An is actually made of.

A river full of round bamboo boats, a kitchen behind the market, Cham towers in a jungle valley, lanes shut to cars after six, silk bent over bamboo, and the Imperial City three hours north over the pass.

Out of town

Hoi An sits three hours from a mountain pass and a thousand-year-old temple.

My Son stands inland in a jungle bowl, brick towers the Cham raised over nine centuries. North of the river the road climbs Hai Van to the sea, past the marble caves, and carries on to the citadel at Hue. The cable car up Ba Na ends at a walkway held in two stone hands.

Basket Boat Ride in the Coconut Forest

Green Coconut Village takes you through Bay Mau Coconut Forest in a round basket boat for about 50 minutes. You can paddle, try crab fishing, watch fishing nets being cast, and add the popular spinning ride. Guides such as Ding, Hung, Kim, and An bring plenty of fun.

Cao lau country

Cao lau, white rose, banh mi. Hoi An eats unlike anywhere else in Vietnam.

The cao lau noodle is supposed to take its water from one old well in the Old Town. The white rose dumpling comes from a single family who still make every one. Book the market walk before the heat, the class that finishes as lunch, and the food walk that only runs after dark.

After dark

At six the Old Town drops the electric light and hangs silk instead.

Cars stop at the bridge, the lanterns come on and the Hoai fills with rowboats selling candles. On the fourteenth night of each lunar month the town goes further and cuts the power altogether.

Only in Hoi An

Three things this town does that nowhere else does.

A lantern built to collapse flat, four hundred years of the town played out by a cast of five hundred, and a tailor who measures you on Tuesday and hands you a jacket on Wednesday.

Silk over bamboo

The Foldable Lantern

The Old Town lantern is a bamboo frame that collapses flat, which is the only reason so many of them leave the country. Sixteen ribs are soaked, bent and tied by hand before the silk goes on, and a class runs about an hour. The workshops that teach it are the ones supplying the shops on Nguyen Thai Hoc, so the frames come out better than anything sold off a market stall.

Five hundred on stage

Hoi An Memories

On an island in the Thu Bon, a cast of roughly five hundred plays four centuries of the town across an open-air stage the size of a field. It runs after dark, the seats furthest back are the ones that take in the whole set, and the tickets are dated. Heavy rain cancels it, which in this town is not a rare event.

Measured on Tuesday

The Tailoring Houses

Hoi An keeps several hundred tailoring houses and a small mill town behind them, which is how a jacket gets cut, fitted and finished inside a day and a half. The workshops worth the morning are the ones that show you the silk coming off the loom first. Leave two nights in town if you want a second fitting.

These four carry dates

Four Hoi An bookings that will not wait until you land.

Most of this town can be arranged over breakfast. These four run on show dates, cable-car queues, sunrise slots and one rider with one spare seat.

  1. 01Hoi An Memories Show & Hoi An Impression Theme Park TicketThe show runs to a fixed calendar and cancels in heavy rain. Tickets are dated, and the seats with the whole stage in view go first.
  2. 02Hoi An/ Da Nang – Ba Na Hills – Golden Bridge Deluxe Small groupThere is a queue for the cable car and the bridge is usually inside a cloud by mid-morning. The early departures exist for that reason.
  3. 03My Son Sanctuary Early Morning w. Champa Food BrunchThe dawn departures are capped, and they are the only ones that reach the towers before both the heat and the coach groups.
  4. 04Hue Imperial City via Hai Van Pass & LunchAn Easy Rider day is one bike, one rider and one passenger. There is no spare seat if you decide on the morning.
When the river comes up

October to December the Thu Bon climbs into the Old Town.

Hoi An floods most years. The lanes along the river go under, boats replace bicycles for a few days, and every open-air plan moves indoors. June to August does the same job with heat instead of water. Both have one answer: book something with a roof and a table.
